Generous Donations = Tuition
Assistance for
Catholic School Students
Thanks to the continued generosity of local
businesses and individual donors, the
Diocese of Scranton is able to provide more
than 1,000 scholarships to help deserving
families provide a Catholic education for
their children in the current academic year.
The average gift this year is $891 and was
awarded based on family need.
Awards were made possible through a variety
of funds, the largest of which is from
businesses who participate in the
Pennsylvania State Educational Improvement
Tax (EITC) program. This program offers
direct tax credit to businesses that make a
donation to the Diocese of Scranton
Scholarship Foundation. Other support is
awarded through the Bishop McCormick Fund,
parish scholarships, other awards restricted
to specific schools, and existing endowed
scholarships.
“We are grateful to all those who make a
financial investment in Catholic education
through support of scholarships,” said
Monsignor Joseph Bambera, Delegate to the
Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese.
“There is a cost to providing an outstanding
education within the teachings of the
Catholic Church. We are grateful for friends
who help us make Catholic education an
affordable option for our families.”
Scholarships are awarded based on
evaluations by Private School Aid Service, a
company that specializes in financial aid
programs. Awards are made based on this
information and in keeping with any
restrictions to specific school(s) as
desired by the donor.
The opportunity to participate has been
opened to LLC and Sub-Chapter S
corporations. Companies that wish to join in
supporting Catholic education are encouraged
to contact the Scholarship Foundation at
570-207-2250.
“As pleased as we are for current support
and all it does, we realize that this
generous funding does not meet the needs of
all our families,” Monsignor Bambera said.
“This is a great opportunity for nearly
every business to make a difference in our
schools and the next generation’s
education.”
Applications for tuition assistance from the
Scholarship Foundation for the 2010-11
academic year will be available in each
school beginning in February.

Applicants for tuition
assistance are ranked based on financial
need. The amount of money available at each
school varies because donors have the option
of designating their contributions for
specific schools or allowing them to be used
wherever the need is greatest.
