OBITUARY
REVEREND DANIEL J. YENKEVICH
Reverend Daniel Yenkevich, of Scranton, died on the 23rd day of September, 2023, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, after having faithfully served the Diocese of Scranton for thirty-three years.
Reverend Daniel Yenkevich, son of the late Joseph A. Yenkevich and Teofile F. Varnagiris Yenkevich, was born in Butler Township, PA on November 17, 1934. He was a graduate of St. Gabriel’s High School, Hazleton and attended the University of Scranton earning a Bachelor of History Degree in June 1963. Father attended Niagara University earning a Masters Degree in History and specialization certificate in Soviet and Eastern European Affairs. He received his seminary education from Pope Saint John XXIII National Seminary, Weston, MA and was ordained to the priesthood in St. Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton on June 30, 1990 by the Most Reverend James C. Timlin, D.D., Bishop Emeritus of Scranton.
Father Yenkevich was appointed Assistant Pastor at Holy Trinity, Nanticoke in July 1990 and appointed to the Order of Franciscan Friars Minor in June 1992. In October 1998, Father was appointed Assistant Pastor at St. Matthew, East Stroudsburg.
Father received his first pastorate at St. Mary’s Annunciation, Kingston in September 2001 and served until his retirement in November 2009.
After his retirement, Father Yenkevich continued to serve the Diocese by accepting several appointments as Administrator at St. John, East Stroudsburg in March 2010, St. Cecelia and St. John the Baptist, Exeter in January 2011, Queen of Heaven, Hazleton in March 2012, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Pocono Pines in January 2014 and at SS Peter and Paul, Plains in June 2015.
Father Yenkevich is survived by his brother, William Yenkevich, of Conyngham, PA, several nieces and nephews and his caregiver, John Dortelina. .
In addition to his parents, Father was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, Evelyn Yencho, Tilly Roszkowski, Ruth Lucas, Dorothy Dombroski, Eleanor Mockaitis, Joseph Yenkevich, Michael Yenkevich, George Yenkevich, Sargiusas (Saggie) Yenkevich, Kostanta (Gus) Yenkevich, Charles Yenkevich, Algert Yenkevich, Edward Yenkevich and William Yenkevich. .
Viewing will take place on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish, Kingston, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Vesper Service will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m.
A Pontifical Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish, Kingston at 12:00 p.m. preceded by a viewing from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
Interment will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Kingston.
